Stories Unbound

Today I’ve got an announcement to make, just a little, big brag about a sensational opportunity that I’ve been given!

Much to my delight, That Book You Like has been chosen as one of five ‘Unbloggers’ for the upcoming Melbourne Writers Festival! Essentially, the guys at the MWF have asked me to get along to lots of events and let you know all about them. Nice gig hey?!

Now, I think it’s fair to say that the Melbourne Writers Festival is the highlight event of my year. This festival really helps to explain what my blog is all about. To me, it’s about getting up and out of the house and celebrating all things bookish. It’s a rare opportunity to pause and reflect, to discuss and admire writing, reading and general creativity.

Stories Unbound, Melbourne’s 2011 Writers Festival will be running from the 25 August until 4 September. Mark it in your diaries, and if you’re looking for me, just check the festival program.

As you’ve no doubt noticed by now, my taste is very eclectic. My personal ‘crusade’ is to mix it all up a little – a bit of music, a little bit of film, some yummy food, and some choice words to read.

Stories Unbound absolutely fits the bill, hence my excitement. The festival program explores how important cultural elements such as art, television and film, politics and music relate to, and enhance our abilities as storytellers. The program promises to provide many and varied opportunities to hear from esteemed individuals on the creative, the serious and the delectable.

You can peruse the complete program here.

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll feature a few stand-out events, and I’d love to hear your suggestions as to what I should get along to.

In the meantime, I can say that personally, I’m particularly looking forward to peaking over the shoulder of inspired illustrators at Federation Square. I’m likely to half live at the Toff in Town, and I’m very interested in hearing the insights of experts on the challenges facing journalism (and writing in general) in this digital age.

I’m also thinking that this might just be the perfect excuse to treat myself to a night out at Vue De Monde or MoVida Aqui, to hear from some writers who’ve made it their life’s work to celebrate culinary delights.

Writing is about so much more than books. It doesn’t really matter if the words are printed or electronic. Writing is about people, about ideas, about stories – true and imagined. Stories Unbound gives us all an opportunity to explore this, to share written stories, drawn stories, moving stories, our stories.

Can you tell I’m a little excited?
